REMEMBERING VICTOR RANDOLPH KENNEDY

Victor Randolph Kennedy was born on October 23, 1936, in the parish of St Michael, Barbados.   As the first boy in the family, Victor was pampered by everyone, but his grandmother, the late Ethel Kennedy, a professional midwife, persuaded his parents to allow her to raise him.   The following is an extract from a “tribute” delivered by his brother, Cedolph:
“From birth Victor was cared for by his grandmother, the late Ethel Kennedy, grandma to us but affectionately referred to in the district as “Nurse Kennedy”. The household in which he grew up had a unique “status quo” attached to it.   It was a devout Christian home with strict religious principles.   There were three adult members of the family; grandma, aunt Daphne and an elderly lady simply referred to as Baby (I understood Baby had the onerous task of raising all the Kennedy children), the other members of the household were Victor and our cousin Peter Kennedy.   The uniqueness of the household was that the three elders worshipped or belonged to different denominations; grandma at James St Methodist Church, aunt Daphne was the organist at the Salvation Army while Baby worshipped at a Pentecostal Church popularly referred to in Barbados as “The Church with the Lighted Cross”.   Traditionally the Kennedy Clan grew up and adopted the C of E Faith.   There was also a particular pattern which all of us followed, we attended St Mary’s school, worshipped at St Mary’s Church and played an active part in the church’s activities.   Victor served at the altar, yours truly, a chorister and Peter an Usher.   An elder brother, the late Keith Hall was also an Usher.

Every Sunday the time table went like this (for Victor and Peter that is); First it was 7 o’clock mass at St Mary’s Church, when they got home, there was grandma waiting to take them to James St Methodist Church, then it was aunt Daphne’s turn to take them to the Salvation Army while Baby waited patiently to whisk them off to the Pentecostal Church.   It is so ironic that these churches were situated within 5 minutes walking distance from each other and our residence was smack bang in the middle, just a stone’s throw from these churches.   The other fascinating feature is that all these services complimented each other in terms of the order of service; suffice to say no one was ever late.   After all that Victor and Peter still had to attend evening song at St Mary’s Church.   Victor’s boasts however, is that he attended more churches and worshipped under more denominations in one day than most people”.

Victor became a member of St Paul’s Anglican Church immediately after his arrival in Montreal, joined the choir and got very involved in the Church’s community activities for over 25 years.

Victor was a true family man, whose love, dedication and support for his adopted family was exemplary.   This sentiment was echoed in the eulogy delivered by his step-daughter Jennifer, in part she said; “Victor’s love, loyalty, devotion, and more importantly his support, played a significant part in our lives”.

Victor Kennedy is the third of four siblings and was a printer by profession. He worked for a number of newspapers in Barbados including; The Observer, The Recorder, The Barbados Advocate and the defunct Daily News before immigrating to Montreal, Canada, in early 1970.

The Kennedy family mourns the loss of a beloved son, brother and family man.   May he forever rest in peace.
