Man, 53, remanded over indecent assault of 16-year-old girl

A 53-year-old man who is alleged to have indecently assaulted a 16-year-old girl was yesterday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Disbelief was etched on Pearl Smith's face yesterday. Her 37-year-old brother, Oliver Smith, a security guard, had died in hospital Saturday, after being shot during an exchange between gunmen and a licensed firearm holder.

BARBADOS machine readable passports are to be issued to nationals who apply at this country's embassies and consulates overseas.

An official statement said the Immigration Department and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would shortly embark on the programme which will see Government extending the issue of the new format.

No one but the patients of St Jude and the staff who were there to care for them on September 9, can give all the horrific details of what went down that fateful morning. Screams on the inside were masked as explosions and a blazing fire almost entirely consumed the surgical ward of St Jude hospital. It was impossible for anyone on the outside to feel the fear of the victims trapped inside.

Wayne Venture of Lot 16 Section ‘C’ Christianburg, Linden was remanded to prison last Thursday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly smoking cannabis and being found with a quantity of the illicit drug in a bag that was in his possession. He initially pleaded guilty to the charges of smoking cannabis and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read them to him, but insisted that the evidence be presented in court.

Minister of Finance and Leader of Government Business in the Lower House, Nazim Burke, has come out in defense of his Prime Minister against another set of “disrespectful” remarks cast at him by former Grenadian leader and now holder of the post of Opposition Leader, Dr. Keith Mitchell.

During a sitting of the house last week Tuesday, Dr. Mitchell in his latest barrage of verbal assault on Prime Minister, Tillman Thomas made several comments especially about his intellectual level. Mitchell’s comments came during debate on a Motion he presented to remove Speaker of the House, George McGuire from the Chair for his alleged “bias and hostility” towards the Opposition New National Party (NNP).

The Ministry of Tourism has come out swinging in reaction to an editorial printed in last Friday’s edition of the Daily Observer titled We Don’t Want Them Here.

The editorial was based on the six tourists who were charged after causing a public brawl with the police. In the editorial, the Daily Observer accused the minister of tourism of not defending Antigua and Barbuda and the law when he appeared on the Tom Joyner Morning Show last Monday.
